From the President’s desk
3 October 2018
Hi all
WHAT'S OLD IS NEW AGAIN
It is 3rd October, 2018 - and the Rotary Club Strathfield is back at
its favoured venue, the Strathfield Golf Club. It was not easy. In
golfing terms it was an “ambrose event”, a thank you, to all
players, especially to Arie in making the last putt . It was well
read. .
PROBUS AND SENIOR CITIZENS
COMMITTEE
On Friday 28 September, Thaya and myself attended the Chartering of
the Probus Club of Lidcombe. I was asked to place the President’s
Collar on the Foundation President, Ken Wallace, and to pin Vice
President Keith, Secretary Mary, and Treasurer Faye. No gender
imbalance. To term a Rotary phrase, Lidcombe Probus Club is our
daughter Club. So I have asked Ken to remember its parents, and Ken
assured me, they do not want to be orphans. Congratulations to Ken
and the Probus Club of Lidcombe. We hope to see more of them.
I was impressed by the Probus Office administration. They operated
on a small budget, and are Chartering new clubs almost weekly
throughout Australia and New Zealand. Travel and participation
groups, such as walking groups, are core activities of Probus. Fund
raising is not in their objectives, it is life style and fellowship.
It is not surprising they have an attractive travel insurance
package, without which the overseas travel excursions would not
occur. Rotarians can access these benefits. Further information on
the subject is required, as we do require some fun and travel. Dual
membership of both Rotary and Probus does occur!
TRISH GOLF DAY
At our last meeting I announced the Board has gladly agreed to host
the “ Trish Golf Day” , the Club last held a Trish Golf Day in 2012.
The event will be similar to the 2012 event. Honorary Club Member
Niall King is back, weaving his magic touch, and we will be with
him. He is the master of events… The golf days were legendary, many
members shared my sadness when they ceased. The Golf Day Dinner will
be a Rotary Meeting. The dinners of the past were wonderful! I
remember looking across the room- there were the sporting greats of
my childhood, Ken Rosewall and Bobby Simpson.
February was the month of the golf day, and a tentative booking for
21 February, 2019, has been pencilled-in the event book at
Strathfield Golf Club. The proceeds of the day will go to the Trish
Foundation for a cure for MS. This Foundation is unique it has
minimal admin costs. The research has not found a cure, but
medications have developed, to the extent for many who have the
disease their daily life is not affected. The success of the Trish
Foundation, and the treatments for MS will be better told by others
at the golf day dinner.
As the discussions on the Golf Day developed, with Niall and Joe, I
thought of the saying, “what’s old is new again”, also a part of the
fabric of the Club was being repaired.
LAST WEEKS GUEST SPEAKER
On matters medical, last week’s guest speaker at the Club, Dr Dinesh
Patel, on mens prostate was an education. A member said me, the
group talk is preferred, to the one on one consultation.
Thank you Roy another wonderful speaker.
