Hi all
Spring Festival
Thanks to Andrew, Thaya and the Rotary
team that came together on Saturday for the Spring Fair. In the
morning when I was there, it was a beautiful spring day; stalls from
almost all the local associations were present. Strathfield
Councillors were promoting drought relief. Catherine Sullivan Centre
was there, and The Men’s Shed were the neighbouring stall. While the
net takings for the day are yet to be announced, it is secondary as
the Spring Fair is a community event. The photos of our members at
the stall shows how it was a community event for the Club, mates
with their family, at the BBQ, all working together.
Lucky Father
It was not an ordinary Father’s Day for
Andrew. He was off to see his beloved Bulldogs, at ANZ Stadium,
Canterbury lost to Cronulla, 18/30, but Andrew won the raffle, a Kia
Picanto. He was up there on the big screen, arms raised triumphantly
in victory. Well - what will happen to the Porsche? Leave it at
home! Well done, you are a true supporter of the Doggies…. the last
time I saw them play they were the mighty Berries…
Trish Ball
On Saturday evening it was a pleasure for
Olga and I to attend the Trish Ball at Sydney Hilton. Leigh Sales,
from 7.30, was the MC, a different lady when off the screen. There
were a couple of Rotarians dining, also Niall King, Carol and Roy
Langsford, were there, promoting the Trish Foundation. For newer
members, The Trish Foundation was the MS Research Foundation,
commenced by Carol and Roy Langsford when their lovely daughter
Trish died, aged 30, from MS (Multiple Sclerosis) in 2002. Our Club
was an initial supporter, with a Golf Day and dinner. Ken Rosewall
and a number of other sporting greats would be there. Ken and his
wife were there on Saturday. While leaving, we stopped to chat to
Niall, who was tallying up the bidders on the auctions, still going,
expecting to leave about 1.30am. The patron of the Trish Foundation
is Brendan Nelson, who spoke on the night, emphasising the Trish
Foundation remains and continues to be a leading funding
organisation for MS research. He added it also was the example of
the continuing love of parents for their daughter, who died in the
prime of her life from a disease for which there was no cure. New
medications have been developed that are prolonging life, sadly too
late for many. I think we can say something similar about Niall’s
dedication. Our Club came back to the Trish Foundation in a small
way with a donation earlier in the year, on the occasion of the
passing of Niall’s wife Carrol from MS. For the older members the
spirit of the Club remains with the Trish Foundation. For our ‘disco
members’, the live band was Jelly Bean Jam, at midnight the dance
floor was full, the best number was "Video Killed the Radio Star",
the singer put it out there, with the movements. Just like the
Wiggles. Check out the You Tube clips.
What's the
buzz?
To our members, to keep up-to-date with
the Club and to know what is happening, please read the bulletin,
Web Page and Facebook. You are a member of a great organisation.
It’s not just
Rotary
On my desk, meaning computer, I have an on-line assignment calling
me and I will end here. Current Club trivia; I have counted up 5
members completing tertiary studies. Not bad for a community group
where the mean age is 50 plus. Let me know if this is wrong
