From the President’s desk
6 March 2019
Hi all
Trish 2020
After the success of the Trish Golf Day and Dinner, now two weeks
back, 21 February, I continue to reminisce and ask the Club to
consider how we do better next time in February 2020. The incoming
Board with President Elect Arie are supportive, and there will be a
next time, February 2019. I myself, will play more golf over the
next year. For Trish 2020, I will have long drives, chipping on, and
making the putts, I'm dreaming! Not so our Treasurer Rod, over the
last week he been out paying the last of the bills and by Wednesday
we will have a clear result, heading for $30,000 plus. Thanks Rod.
Youth Achievement Awards
Our next big event is hosting the Strathfield Youth Achievement
Awards, to be held Strathfield Council Town Hall on Wednesday
evening, 10 April 2019. Nominations are open for various categories,
visit our web site
(click) . For Rotarians it is a transfer meeting. There will be
no meals served, but small finger food will be available on arrival.
On seating, the awards will proceed.
Redistrict
In the Bulletin last week, I raised the view of the need for our
Rotary District 9675, to merge, or as termed "Redistrict". This is a
response to the aging and declining membership of Rotary Clubs in
Australia, and generally in the western world. There is a
concept
paper and a facts sheet
(FAQ) on the
District web page (click).
Please have a read and form your own view. I have had comments from
our members, to be expected, both supportive and contrary views. A
member has let me know his support for the District Governor (DG),
namely: "Our membership and club number trends point to us reaching
that point in a couple of years anyway. I think I'm correct in
representing the position of the DG when I say that we feel it is
better to proceed with the redistricting now, while it's in our
hands, rather than be forced to do it by RI when we reach that
threshold level ......when it is 'automatically triggered", and it's
out of our control. Our membership and club number trends point to
us reaching that point in a couple of years anyway. I do not share
this view, it is to bring forward change that is speculation based
on the demise of Rotary. Please make your views known. Soon we will
have indicated to the DG our Club's position.
Vigil lights
An observation, leaving the Golf Club, last week, driving up
Weeroona Road, the mail trucks were gone, there were flickers of
light on the left, from the Rookwood Cemetery, the Necropolis, it
was the vigil lights, solar powered. This is a new perspective to
the song City Lights and the phrase renewable energy. By way, this
part of the cemetery is under the transmission lines...
The Poem
I have chosen another bush poet, Les Murray. Les lives at Bunyah,
perhaps one day, I also will live at Bunyah, he lives down road from
me, but I have not met him. His poetry is so familiar to me, the
locations and subject matter. This poem is about wearing shorts,
easy wear in summer, as we move into autumn, my shorts will soon
winter in at the back draw. Les will have you in shorts all year
round. I hope this poem is appreciated and understood:
