President’s Report

11 October 2017

“Wow!  That was some Guy called Sandra, Robin!”

Holy Flying Foxes, Batman!  Did I just see Batgirl with a bat in a mat.  Not a rat in a vat; and not a cat in a hat, but a bat in a mat, at Strathfield Bat Cave last week?  Pow!  !  Bam!  Crash!

Well, we had a very interesting and enlightening presentation from Sydney’s very own Batgirl – Sandra Guy – last week in our Club.  It’s not often we have an animal as a special guest, but this week we did, and it was a special occasion – World Animal Day – how very appropriate Programs Chair, PP Raymond McCluskie.  Thanks for the inspirational scheduling.  It was evident that all members truly enjoyed the experience and were fascinated by the little critter – Barbie – that accompanied Sandra.  For the full report, please see the Speaker Notes section later in this bulletin; it was truly very educational as well as entertaining.

IPP Stephen Taylor

In my President’s Update last week I announced that I had received and accepted the resignation from our Club, of IPP Stephen Taylor.  It is with much sadness that I received this notice, however I fully understand and respect the decision that Stephen has made.  Of course, Stephen is very welcome at our Club at any time, and I hope he pops in for a visit every now and then.  He has given a lot of himself to Rotary for over 40 years, and he now deserves a break to focus on other important aspects of his life.  Stay well, Steve, and stay in touch!

Celebrity Guest Chair for Tonight’s Meeting

As you will have figured out by now, I’m not here this week.  So… as a special treat, I have arranged for a Celebrity Guest Chair for the meeting, none other than the Golden Greek himself – Arie Pappas!  I do hope you enjoy Arie’s inimitable style at the meeting this week; he is sure to please and deliver a very professional meeting.

Next Week’s Speaker

This week we hear from Peter Watson on Lessons in Life and Business.  I wish I was here this week to hear Peter; this guy (no relation to Sandra!), has run over 50 marathons.  I thought I was doing OK having run 6; I feel so inadequate already.  The question to ask him is ‘why?’; Why run so many?  What motivates him?.  Did you know that we are all motivated in all that we do by a part of the brain known as the Limbic Brain, or the Limbic System.  This is the emotional core of our being.  It has no language; no words live there; it is where feelings and emotions come from; and it is where our ‘why do I do this?’ lives.  I wonder if Peter will talk about this?  If he doesn’t, as him ‘why?’.  Enjoy the evening.  I’ll see you next week.
