PRESIDENT: STEPHEN TAYLOR

Steve’s Snippets.

I have a suggestion. As you may remember the late Maurie Moroney, was interested in giving a name to our weekly bulletin which remains just "The Bulletin"

As we cyclists were having our post ride coffee last Sunday we were wondering what Keith could call his report next year, and somebody said what about "Keith spoke" (as in speaking and bikes), and I said (I was pretty tired at the time after doing a quick 65km training ride) what about calling our bulletin the spoke. How fitting considering the enormous popularity of cycling in our club (apologies to Graham True of course. There you go fellows, a hopefully pleasant and trivial matter to be discussed along with more serious issues at our Dec 4th club assembly, AGM and election of officers.

Thanks to International Director Joe Campisi for his great organisation of the combined Concord, Burwood, Strathfield meeting last Wednesday. It was an excellent presentation from Duncan’s depleted but very capable team, and they were very appreciative of the gifts of inscribed pewter goblets as a memento of their visit. In addition the room was pleasantly comfortable in temperature and ambience, the service excellent, and the food very good. Sounds like a good place to hold a Rotary Club meeting to me! Hmmmm…………

Now just for comparison, and to show you all how important PP Euan is treating our major fundraiser on March 14th next year.

Burwood is holding their "Big Ball", also at Le Montage, on Feb 28th, two weeks before us. Their price is $110 per head all inclusive, compared to our $75 all inclusive. And remember you will have at least a 1 in 200 chance for a $100 outlay to win a $29,000 Subaru Impreza, or an overseas trip in our raffle. Pretty good odds in my book!!!. AND, don’t forget Euan’s offer of ten (10) tickets for the price of NINE (9) for a table booking. As Euan has said, and fairly in my view, we want our members to come along, and bring there friends or colleagues, but NOT at an exorbitant cost.

Sad news this week, when PP Brian Hennell advised me of the death of past member PDG Bob Taylor (1982-83). As of this writing I am unaware of funeral arrangements, but assume they will be in Tuesday or Wednesday’s Herald. Respects and a short eulogy will be paid to Bob at Wednesday’s meeting.

Thanks to Angelo Franco for getting our "new trailerless high tech" Xmas raffle going. Please support this raffle if you can and help if possible on weekends in the plaza.

Also in Angelo’s news, we are now supporters of The Rotary bowelscan program through both Strathfield Pharmacies. A guest speaker on this lifesaving program will be provided early next year.

Finally, advance notice of a real treat. Due to my early departure for New Zealand on Wednesday morning November 27th, the meeting will be chaired that evening, by President elect Keith "elastic legs’ Stockall. Keith, Euan, Rick and Allan will be leaving The next morning the 28th and we will all be riding in the Rotary organised " Lake Taupo Cycle Classic" on the Saturday. We’ll all be back on Monday the 2nd, so you should still get your Snippets the next week, and we’ll all be there for the elections and AGM.

Thats all I think folks

Steve

PP Harley Tarrant remembering

Bob Taylor

A member of the Rotary club of Strathfield and a Governor of our District now 9690

Bob was club secretary in 1979 when Bob Templeman and I joined the club and it was only a couple of months later that we both got a call from Bob asking us to nominate for the board. On my part, I allowed my arm to be twisted thinking I had no chance of being elected only to find out later that only the exact number of members required for the board had been nominated. Not long afterwards he was nominated to be governor in 1982-83 and he asked me to organise his changeover and to be district conference secretary. This resulted in my attending my first district conference at Gosford during Col Dodds's year .

Bob's district theme for his year was "Australian Awareness" illustrated by a kangaroo above a boomerang. As a result, when he did his official visit to RC of Moorebank, they served him a meat pie with a sachet of tomato sauce. In keeping with his theme, on the Saturday afternoon of his conference we visited Old Sydney Town for the Vocational segment. While there a ceremonial flogging of the governor and his conference secretary (me) took place, an event that pleased everyone and did Bob's reputation no harm. David Croft was club president in his year and Brian Hennell was his District Conference chairman; an excellent choice.

A Rotarian since 1955, I believe that Bob had been president of another club prior to joining Strathfield. He was the executive manager of the NSW Road Transport Industry Committee Limited.

I also learnt from Bob to be an efficient secretary. Whenever we had a meeting Bob would hand out jobs for people to do. The next morning I would get to the office and at about 9.30 would make my first call for Bob only to learn that he had already done it himself. As a result, a race developed between us to see who could get in first.

An amusing event occurred at the changeover at Canterbury racecourse. Bob and his predecessor, Geoff Dubois, were not getting on too well at the time because Bob had told Geoff that he would have to pay for his ticket. Geoff arrived in an angry mood. The club treasurer, Gerry Whalan, was supposed to be collecting the fees but he was late and Paul Lehmann filled in for him. When Geoff approached the table at what was the end of his year as governor, Paul asked "What's your name and what club are you from." Geoff nearly exploded, threw his money on the table, said "If you don't know now, you never will" and stormed off.

I owe a great debt to Bob for getting me involved in club affairs from an early date. Otherwise, I may well have drifted away. I went on to make a career of Rotary.

Finding Charity Groups to Sell Tickets

for

The Strathfield Rotary Christmas Stocking

The Strathfield Rotary Club will again be running a Christmas Stocking for 2002. Instead of relying on the selling of tickets at Strathfield Plaza, we would be pleased to offer raffle tickets to any Charity Groups that members wish to approach. The Charity Groups will be able to sell these tickets on the following basis. Your Charity Group would keep 80% of the ticket income and forward 20% back to Strathfield Rotary with the sold tickets. Each book contains ten tickets @ $2 each and will raise $20, hence Your Charity Group will keep $16 and $4 will be forwarded to The Strathfield Rotary Club with each sold book of tickets. Strathfield Rotary will print the raffle tickets with sales beginning in November 2002. The drawing of the raffle will take place on the afternoon of Saturday 21st December in the Strathfield Plaza. Sold tickets will need to be returned to the Rotary Club of Strathfield by 14th December ,2002. The Christmas stocking will have three prizes: -

1. First prize a ‘Polair’ split, wall-mounted air conditioner, fully installed

2. Second prize an ‘OMNI wide screen TV with a DVD and home theatre system

3. Third prize a Sony Playstation 2.

If you wish your Charity Group to be part of this Christmas stocking, please contact Angelo Franco on 9642 3262 or 0412 275677 to arrange books of tickets. A letter explaining the system will be sent to Your Charity with each set of tickets (Minimum ten books of tickets).

The Architect, Artist and Engineer

An architect, an artist and an engineer were discussing whether it was better to spend time with the wife or a Mistress.

The architect said he enjoyed time with his wife, building a solid foundation for an enduring

relationship.

The artist said he enjoyed time with his mistress, because of the passion and mystery he found

there.

The engineer said, "I like both."

"Both?"

Engineer: "Yeah. If you have a wife and a mistress, they will each assume you are spending time

with the other woman, and you can go to the lab and get some work done."

A Surgeon, Architect and Lawyer

A surgeon, an architect and a lawyer are having a heated bar room discussion concerning which

of their profession is actually the oldest profession.

The surgeon says: "Surgery IS the oldest profession. God took a rib from Adam to create Eve and you can't go back further than that."

The architect says: "Hold on! In fact, God was the first architect when he created the world out of chaos in 7 days, and you can't go back any further than THAT!"

The lawyer puffs his cigar and says: "Gentlemen, Gentlemen...who do you think created the CHAOS??!!"
