Guest Speaker Report Wednesday 6 April 2011 by Rotarian Ian Johnson (reporter) Last week we had our Information Evening for prospective new members. The evening was organised by PP Rod McDougall and Ray Wilson. PDG David Croft was our first speaker. David spoke about the history of Rotary and its many achievements including Rotary’s huge efforts and achievements towards the eradication of polio. He concluded by saying that Rotary gives ordinary people the opportunity to do extraordinary things. PP Peter Foss then addressed us. He advised us that he was a foundation member of our Club having joined at its inception in 1971. He gave us a brief history of the Club including the effect of RBT which lead to shorter meetings and the eventual inclusion of women members. He noted that the future of the Club lay with new members. PP Kevin Freund then introduced David Martin (Westpac). Kevin advised us that David had just returned from the outward bound GSE to the Philippines. David was then admitted as a new member by President Peter. David was appointed to the Community Service Committee and Kevin was appointed his mentor. David Martin (Events Security Systems) then spoke to us about his experiences as a new Rotarian. He said that he enjoyed the fellowship and the opportunity to give back to the community. He noted that as part of a large organisation like Rotary you can change the world. PP Joe Saad also spoke to us. He noted that members keep coming to Rotary as the meetings are fun. He also spoke about how Rotary inspires selflessness and also teaches leadership skills. He finished with the comment “it’s great to be a Rotarian”. Our last speaker was PP Peter Manenti. Peter told us that he became a member in 1971 after being nominated by his employer. Peter said that he is still a member as he enjoys the fellowship and also enjoys the weekly guest speakers who give often inspiring and educational presentations. He also noted that by each member giving a little Rotary can give a lot and this leaves members feeling very satisfied. Peter finished by encouraging our guests to give serious consideration to joining Rotary. |
