Guest speakerTreska Roden and President Peter SmithOur guest speaker was Treska Roden. Treska is the founder of the Sydney College of Etiquette and spoke to us about Etiquette in Business. Treska was introduced by Ian Johnson.
Treska commenced by telling us a story about three job applicants who were invited to dinner with the boss’ wife. The one that showed consideration for her by pulling out her chair before sitting down himself was the one who got the job. Treska pointed out that manners are all about showing consideration for other people. If you know how to behave in business then you are able to relax and focus on the customer.
Treska then spoke to us about each of the modules in her course on Corporate Etiquette:

First Impressions- If you make a bad first impression then you have to work very hard to overcome it.

Introductions- How to introduce people and how to shake hands.

Communication-This covers a wide area from answering the phone correctly to sending Christmas cards. Treska advised us that Christmas cards and Christmas gifts mean so much more to the recipient if they are personalised.

Speaking- How to give speeches effectively and the appropriate content of speeches for particular occasions.
.
Personal Behaviour- How not to end up in the media and in the courts.

Good Conversation- Treska gave us examples of what NOT to say including the following:
- Are you married?
- Have you had cosmetic surgery?
- I can see that I will have to simplify this for you.

Networking- Handing out and receiving business cards and effective follow up.

Dining Etiquette- Treska informed us that there are 64 rules to be followed under this topic.

Setting the Table- How to get it right.

Entertaining Corporate Executives- How to be a good host in various settings.

International Etiquette- If your customer is from another culture learn important aspects of that culture before meeting so that you don’t offend.

In conclusion Treska told us a story involving Richard Branson who disguised himself as a taxi driver to discover how contestants on his show behaved in everyday life. Those that assisted the driver with lifting bags and chattered with the driver gave a good impression.
After answering members questions Treska was thanked by PP Kevin Freund.
