Guest Speaker Report Wednesday 20 April 2011 by Rotarian Ian Johnson (reporter) Our guest speaker was Major Adam Rock. Adam is currently Officer Commanding, Alpha Company, 3rd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (Parachute). Adam was introduced by Chris Virgona. Adam was previously working for a bank. He had some mates in the Army and decided to join them in a more adventurous life. Adam advised us that his voice was a little strained from shouting the orders at long drill square practice sessions for Kapyong Day. Adam informed us that Australian and Canadian troops fought at Kapyong and their actions stopped the enemy from taking the capital of South Korea. The battle is to be commemorated with a parade on the 24th April. Adam then spoke to us about Anzac Day. He said that Anzac Day is part of the heritage of Australia and should make us all proud. It is the day we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Their actions have enabled us to enjoy peace freedom and democracy today. Adam informed us that today’s Army is very busy at home and overseas. Adam said that Afghanistan is a lethal and dangerous environment for our troops. Adam also said that the equipment available today is much better. However the complexity of the modern Army means that much more time is required to be spent on corporate governance. Adam advised us that his battalion will be moving to Townsville later this year. They will be joining two sister battalions already stationed there. In conclusion Adam advised us that community support is essential for the Army to be able to do its job effectively. After answering members questions Adam was thanked by PP Roger Vince.
