The month of October is Rotary Vocational Service Month and it is a pleasure to highlight the achievements of those in our workplace and community who are embracing all aspects of their vocations by “Doing it once, Doing it well and building a better Australia”.

Tonight we extend a warm welcome to our many guests joining us for The Pride of Workmanship Awards.

A highlight of the Strathfield Rotary year, the awards are our way of recognizing and acknowledging women and men, nominated by their employer, peers or members of the community, for their achievement and commitment to consistently perform to the highest standards in their work.

Last week’s guest speaker, Hayes van der Meer, the Men’s Health Ambassador for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, certainly provided members with some sobering thoughts and informative details of his experience of being diagnosed with prostate cancer at a young age, being cured and now living a healthy life with his family, while continuing to spread awareness of the benefits of early diagnosis. As a result of the challenge presented by our Sergeant Allan Petersen to members, I am happy to announce that an amount of $440.00 will be donated to the Prostate Cancer Foundation.

Congratulations to Domenico Alvaro and his company Alvaro Bros for winning 3 major awards at the 2009 Housing Industry Association’s NSW Housing Awards on Saturday night. And special thanks to Johanna and Domenico for their generous hospitality at their home in Bowral on Sunday providing for a most enjoyable day of fellowship.
