Pride of Workmanship – Vocational Service

The Pride of Workmanship Awards is arguably the most important part of Rotary’s Vocational Service program.   The Awards have been an ongoing program in Australia since 1975

So tonight is a highlight of the Strathfield Rotary year; the awards are our way of recognising and acknowledging women and men, nominated by their employers, peers or members of the community, for their achievement and commitment, who consistently perform to the highest standards in their work.

When we make theses awards we acknowledge the achievements of those in our workplace and community who are embracing all aspects of their vocations by “Doing it once, Doing it well”.

Tonight we extend a warm welcome to all our guests - who no doubt will join us in congratulating the awardees.

Group Study Exchange (GSE)

Next week (9/3/2011) we are host to the two inbound GSE teams from Taiwan and the Philippines. Both teams actually fly in that day so we are literally their first port of call. District Governor Marilyn Mercer will officially welcome the teams to District 9690. This meeting will be a combined Burwood, Breakfast Point and Concord meeting. As this is a partner’s night (6.30 for 7pm) it is important that we know numbers for catering purposes. A commitment Sheet will be circulated this evening.

Paolo Giammarco has arranged a vocational visit and BBQ at the Strathfield SES HQ at 1 Weeroona Road (at Council Depot) on Saturday 12 March at 9am. SES has invited all Rotarians to attend the BBQ. Please contact Paolo for further and more details.

ShelterBox responds – New Zealand earthquake

ShelterBox aid en-route to New Zealand

We have all watched in horror at the unfolding of the 6.3 magnitude earthquake which struck Christchurch on 22/2/11 causing significant loss of life, casualties and damage to infrastructure.

Rotary and ShelterBox have responded by immediately sending 120 ShelterBoxes from Australia and a further 200 tents have been air-freighted from the UK. No doubt Rotary will further respond after consultation with the NZ authorities in regard to whatever they may require.

Clean Up Strathfield – Sunday 6 March – Cooke Park - 8.30am to 12 noon

Strathfield Council have asked Rotary for volunteers to help with the Clean Up Australia campaign on Sunday 6 March – and to provide BBQ facilities from 11am to about 1pm on the day. A commitment sheet will be circulated during tonight’s POW dinner meeting.

Trish MS Golf Day – 17 February

Congratulations to Ray Wilson and Niall King on yet another record breaking golf day for the Trish MS Research Foundation – and it was pleasing to see several Strathfield Rotarians supporting either the golf and/or the dinner. Well done fellows!

Australian Childrens Music Foundation (ACMF)

District Governor’s Aide Dudley Mercer has asked all attendees of the D9690 District Conference to bring along an unwanted musical instrument, which he will pass on to the Australian Children’s Music Foundation – an organization which was founded by Don Spencer to “use the power and emotion of music to help children and youth, particularly the disadvantaged and Indigenous”.

With the assistance of an instrument wholesaler, Dudley has been able to organise a fantastic deal on BRAND NEW nylon string guitars suitable for students. These brand new guitars have minor paint blemishes, but are in perfect playing condition.

The guitars will be supplied in box lots only, with each box containing a mix of colours. Three sizes are available. The prices (including GST) are shown below are available. The prices (including GST)

It is felt that if all clubs in the District could take advantage of this deal it would make our District’s support for this program substantial.

Should any Rotarian be interested in purchasing a $160, $190 or $132 box/lot, so as to support the ACMF, would you please contact me ASAP?

Apologies: I regret that a close family funeral, in Orange, on Wednesday afternoon means that I will be unable to attend tonight’s meeting. However, I am sure that the Pride of Workmanship Awards, under the guidance of Doug Potter, who is the club’s Director of Vocational Service, will be a great success.

President Pete
