Steve’s Snippets 14 May 2003

Although this Rotary Year is rapidly coming to a close, there are still great things happening which amaze. I know most of you like the odd drop of wine or six, but when Brian Hennell (with tremendous thanks to Peter Manenti) organised a wine tasting evening, our attendance figures went through the roof. I’m sure Keith will remember that if his attendance figures drop off.

Regarding future programs for this year, I have now unfortunately had to agree with Brian Hennell that we are now unable to have a change of venue meeting to the Children’s Hospital at Westmead to look over "The Art for Healing Program" we supported at the recent Gala Evening. I am now working with Pres elect Keith to see if he can fit it in sometime in July.

Similarly despite his best efforts Vocational Service Director Keith Byrn will also have to postpone the Police awards evening till sometime in July. This is a blessing however because it would seem that we will have the support and probable attendance of Senior Police, possibly including the Commissioner, and of course some of our newly elected politicians. Stay tuned for Keith’s report for more details.

Consequently the night of June 18th, which has been reserved for a number of uses will now be our Presentation and Thank you night for the Sponsors, supporters and volunteer helpers associated with our very successful Cycle Challenge. On that night I also hope to present a cheque in excess of $5,000 (subject final confirmation with the Treasurer) to The Children’s Medical Research Institute, the terrific result achieved from a confirmed 450 entrants in the ride.

While I’m on dates, in two weeks we will be welcoming the returning GSE team from Scotland. You will remember that our club’s nominee Mary Romanous, was part of that team. I hope that you will also remember that the Scots themselves were fantastic, with warm friendly personalities and an easy style of delivery (even if we did need an interpreter for some of them). Well the good news is these guys are better, and no interpretation is required. This night will be a partner’s night, and I can assure you this will be a night not to miss with a great presentation, of which I have seen a wee bit.

Also on dates don’t forget the District changeover please on June 28th, but have an early night BECAUSE Euan’s marshals (yet to be named) will be needed for the fun run the following morning of the 29th. Anyway that WILL be the last event of my year. As they say, nothing like keeping busy is there?????

Finally, I hope everyone liked our new orange "Marshal" vests which had their first use at the bike ride. Because they worked so well I have now ordered one for each member in yellow with a blue Rotary logo and writing, identifying us as Rotarians. These will be useful for registration, BBQ, treasury and organisational identification at events such as the Fun Run, next bike ride, Carols, BBQ’s etc.

In addition Peter Cipolla is currently sourcing a Navy windbreaker style jacket, complete with logo and club identification for use in the winter months. These will be for optional purchase by members. More details at the meeting.I think when we are out in public as Rotarians we must look professional, organised, and be identifiable (as the marshals were last weekend).

Anyway, that enough again for me this week. Denise and I have just enjoyed four days in country Victoria and you would be amazed at Rotary’s presence in small town, with parks, playgrounds and signs everywhere, but its back to work and the organisation of the Fun Run.

Hope Mothers Day was enjoyable for all and have a good week.

Steve.
