A special thanks
this week to Tony Lanzafame for his organisation of last weeks inaugural
Strathfield Council and Strathfield Rotary youth achievement awards.
It would seem
from listening to the citations for the winners in each category that we
have some very talented young people in our community.
Thanks also to
Councillor Cathy Jones for organising Council’s part of the awards and for
her speech and presentation.
As many of you
realise last week was very busy with two meetings, the second just described
and the first on Monday evening, our combined meeting of Strathfield,
Burwood and Concord which was arranged so that we could all appreciate a
presentation by social researcher and commentator Hugh McKay.
Unfortunately
Hugh became quite ill last Sunday and was unable to attend the meeting.
Fortunately after considerable discussion between me and President Sana of
Burwood we were able to get PP John Mansour to speak. Well I have to say
that we did not miss Hugh at all, as John’s talk on his families migration
to Australia, starting the family business, its change and growth, right
through to their involvement with the Lowy family in early and recent times
was absolutely fascinating. Thanks sincerely for your help John !!!!!
Thanks must of
course also go to George Helou for his donation of a huge fruit basket for
the raffle (no Mansour quilt last week), which greatly assisted in the
raising of over $600, which by agreement was donated to the Rotary
Foundation.
This week is
again a busy week with our meeting tonite and our Anzac Day breakfast at
Cape Cabarita on Friday. Next week will be a partner’s night on WEDNESDAY AT
THE GOLF CLUB (as normal) due to the cancellation of the tri club services
awards.
As advised to you
last week by Vocational Director Keith our club now proposes its own awards
for the Police service on Wednesday June 18th. This will be a night not to
miss I’m sure….
During the week I
was able to catch up with Ross Brown and confirm a date for a Sunday drive
and lunch at his property in the Yarramalong Valley. (For those able to
attend last years event it was judged to be one of our best events for the
year) The revised date will be SUNDAY MAY 25th. A commitment sheet will be
coming around shortly.
Tonite will be a
special night for me as I have the privilege of inducting two (2) new
members; Tim Tolidis, introduced by Tony Lanzafame, and Peter McLaughlin,
introduced by Ray Wilson. Their induction tonight will result in a net GAIN
in membership for the club this year, which is very pleasing.
A sincere welcome
to the friendliest and most active club in the district fellows…..
Finally I want to
thank everyone in advance for the help I know they will give for our
fundraising cycle challenge on Sunday week. This is unfortunately a very
labour intensive event, but only for a few hours on Sunday morning (and an
hour or so for some on Sat. afternoon.
The committee
chaired by Keith Stockall, and ably supported by Rod Mc Dougall, Kevin
Beltrame, Bill Carney, Kevin Freund, Rick Collins and Euan Watson is working
hard to ensure the setup and organisation is correct and acceptable to the
authorities so that next and future years events will benefit.
This work will
also ensure an easier to organise and setup fun run later this year.
That’s enough
from me, I’ve had a great restful Easter break, but this report is going out
late and I’ve got a cycle meeting to organise. Hope you all enjoyed the
Easter break and relax for the upcoming Anzac Day long weekend.
